Accessibility

Everyone should be able to use it.

About one in five people in the UK has a disability. A website that excludes them excludes customers – so this is a practical concern before it is a moral one.

The standard

This site aims to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA. That is the level UK public sector sites are legally required to meet, and it is the one I build every client site to as a matter of course. I am not going to claim perfection – nobody honest does – but where something falls short I want to know and I will fix it.

What that means here

  • Every page works from the keyboard alone, with a visible outline showing where you are.
  • A skip link so you can jump past the navigation.
  • Proper heading structure, so a screen reader can navigate by headings.
  • Text contrast meets AA against every background used.
  • Text resizes when you zoom, and the layout reflows rather than breaking.
  • Images that carry meaning have alt text; decorative ones are hidden from screen readers rather than announced as noise.
  • Animation is decorative only, runs once, and is switched off entirely if your device asks for reduced motion.
  • The FAQ works with JavaScript turned off, and no content depends on hovering.
  • The phone number is a real link, so it dials on a phone rather than needing to be copied out.

Known limitations

The screenshots of client websites on the work page are decorative – the surrounding text describes each site, because the detail inside a screenshot cannot be read by a screen reader. If you want to know what is on any of them, ask and I will describe it properly.

If you are buying a site from me

The same standard applies to what I build for you, at no extra cost. If you are a charity, a council supplier or anyone else with an obligation to meet the regulations, say so at the start and I will document what was done so you have it on record.
